good gun? i've been looking at tavors for ages but I havn't been able to afford one. I found a metal gear box one at airsoftatlanta but I'm not sure if I should get it.

It's inexpensive compared to the ARES "proline" version. Gearbox is made of plastic instead of metal. It should run fine if you leave the spring around the stock level, but I would be very nervous if you started bumping up the FPS.

I haven't held the metal body'd gearbox, but I'd imagine it feels pretty similar to the plastic gearbox version, except that it's got some weight to it in the back. The quality of the plastic externals is LPEG level, and I've seen some LPEGs with better externals. Looks good from afar, but not so much up close, and it's plastic is rather flexy. Now, I don't know how it shoots, the fps, or anything like that, I can only comment on the externals.

Again, these experiences are just with the plastic body'd version, I would hope that the metal body stepped up their game a bit.

I have had the displeasure of working on the ARES Tavor with the metal gearbox. It is honestly not that bad as far as actual parts quality is concerned. If you do not mess with it it aught to be fine for a while. The issue is that the manner in which it is designed is downright retarded. It is a pain to work on, and the parts don't play well with other manufacturers. In fact when I had to fix Hatch's one, the piston I replaced his with got stuck in the back of the GB shell because the shell itself gets narrower in the back and the rails that hold the piston, as well as the sides themselves, push in on the piston's body and it gets locked up. I had to take a Dremel to it for some time to make it work. The next time someone asks me to work on their Tavor I will charge extra. The benefit of having a unique and ergonomic weapon like that is not worth the hassle of it being such a pain to work on and the worries of parts compatibility issues. If you want a bullpup, get something like P90. They are a joy to work on for the most part.
