It contained it for quite some time actually, just like many other "elixirs". Cocaine used to be thought of very much like we perceive caffeine today. Tons of noteworthy historical figures regularly used it in some form. As far as Coca Cola is concerned ("coca" being a shortened cocaine, and "cola" of course meaning a carbonated liquid), once they realized it was more widely marketable as a drink rather than a medication they reformulated it and repackaged it for that purpose, with a smaller amount of cocaine. Eventually the federal government realized cocaine's qualities and outlawed it of course.
