ARMY R85

Post by Avenger » Wed Oct 26, 2011 8:39 am

OKay, I've wanted an L85 since before I knew there was such a thing as an airsoft gun that didn't come from the flea market, Kmart or Walmart. I want one of these twice as much as an AK. However, the G&G was too expensive, and the ICS was too expensive for gun whose brand is often called "I Can't Shoot". So, a while back I found the ARMY chiclone of the G&G L85. Well, I ask our resident chiclone expert, Steevo, about it, and he said it was junk. Well, I laid the subject to rest, until yesterday, I asked Kory if there were any affordable L85 replicas, and he said the ARMY R85 was awesome.

So, that brings me to the question following my cool story(bro), does anyone else have experience with this gun?

Go figure, but I've got some experience with the gun.

Full metal, hand guard and pistol grip are plastic. The plastic is a little cheap, but they usually sit snugly, and if they don't, a few layers of tape in the right places fix that. The upper and lower receivers are usually wedged together on the ARMY L85, they still lock together, but you usually have to bend it a little to get it to fit like it is supposed to. Not really a bad thing, but that means it won't fall apart if the pin comes out. But, the metal is solid and won't break easily.

Internally, the gearbox is a hoss. There are two versions from what I've seen. The old version has 7mm metal bushings, XYT gears, stock torque motor, and a JG Cream colored piston, though it's 19 teeth instead of the normal 15/16. It has alright compression, and the shimming is pretty awful. The wires are weak, but they work. And the hop up is the worst of it all. I've seen at least one that has had a fault hop up chamber, as in, it wasn't properly molded, and wouldn't allow the barrel, or bbs to sit properly in the hop up chamber. Other than that, it's usually just your chiclone crap hop up.

On the new version, the hop up is the same, crap. But it's still an M4 hop up chamber, which means it's easy to find replacements. Anyway, the big difference is in the gearbox itself. Same motor, same gears, but 8mm steel bushings, and the piston is much more reinforced than the old one, and it is missing the second to last tooth in an attempt at AoE correction. The wires are still bad, but the gearbox itself is quite tankly.

The reviews I've read say that the gun awesome, and that it may or may not be stamped steel. Noone though to put a magnet on it I guess. BUt, I'm still kind of wary. I tend to not trust reviews, because my R4 had a great review, but it lasted me two backyard battles.

That's the one I'm referring to. The only experience I have with them is from years ago when they first came out. I was unaware of the fact that there is a newer, less crappy version.

Always remember; most reviewers don't know what the hell they are talking about. The trick is to be able to tell the few useful reviews by informed people apart from the plethora of junk reviews by people blowing hot air.

I'm excited. A spring AK47 from a company called "YIKA" with the exact same logo as CYMA, with different letters, was the first gun I ever used, and there is a special place in my heart for them. BUT, I saw the L85 on TV or something before I started playing airsoft and fell in love with it.

Bah, first you want an ak instead of an m4, now an l85... Stop moving down in the world! In all seriousness, star summed it up. And when things start giving you problems, just use duct tape. Lord knows how long star had that stuff on his l85...

Also bear in mind, the l85 has some of the most atrocious ergonomics of any gun I have ever used unless its been modded Heavily. The thing just feels wonky (IMO of course :D )

There have been a lot of games since the last fatality. Roses are red, violets are blue, so is your car at 102

Suggestion: Get the funds, then lay out your options. Then decide from your own personal taste they style of weapon. Then find companies inside your funds, and post what they are up here. All starts with money. You dont see me asking about my 556, 416, fn2000, or MAR options do ya?

i shot one. i had one. it broke after over 90,000 shots. it is built to last. FREAKIN GET IT!!!. the only bad part is that since the mag it comes with is slightly larger than the other mags it is compatible you have to mod the mags ever so slightly. you need to take a pair of needle nose pliers and bend the mag catch thing so it will catch. it takes all of 1 minute if you're just plain stupid. it took me 15 seconds. other than tha, it's a great gun. best part is, it don't cost $300!!!! if you don't get one after i typed all this i will eat your family.

I'll blow your head off with a 20 gauge if you come near family; I love them very much.

I'm either getting this gun or a RS Type 56-2, it depends on how much cash I can scrape up. Thanks for the advice!
