Stupid Wires.. Quick Question

Post by Felix » Sat Nov 27, 2010 4:46 pm

Well i was disassembling my gun today to clean the barrel and other parts, when all of the sudden my wires poked me in the eye. Turns out that the solder and shrink-wrap came undone around my inner deans connectors. So just wondering if i solder the junk off the actual deans, would it hurt the (i guess copper or gold) conductors?  Also I'm debating if actually opening anything relating to my gun brings me bad luck.

As I'm the one that originally soldered said connectors, I'm confused by what you did... Could you go into more detail as to how you disassembled the gun and what all you did?

As for hurting the connector, no you can't hurt it by heating it up in an attempt to remove the solder... it's just really hot.. even the plastic of the connector gets hot.

Ok so i took the stock off, front hand guard, and mag well with no issue. I unscrewed the three front screws and took the barrel and front receiver off. I unhooked the deans and cleaned the barrel up and looked for any dirt (friends gun that i play along side with had too much in it, caused problems, was seeing if mine has the same). Put it all fully back together and connected. Went to shoot and nothing, and so i took the hand guard off, battery was connected. Took the mag well off and the other deans was hooked up correctly. I saw a wire hanging off and disconnected. The wire connected to the negative conductor on the deans had come off of the solder, and the other one followed in suit with a very easy flick. The shrink-wrap slid up and down (but now that i think of it that was probably an extra piece you put there) and the negative wire had none on it.

Hmm... that's weird that the wire did that as I did the Echo1 and the KWA the same day, the same exact way and have no problems with the KWA...

But I didn't even finish reading this before I saw a major problem... on the E1's all you have to do it remove the gear box, release the hop up from the barrel assembly and pull it through the whole in the back of the stock. E1's are not like say KWAs where you HAVE to do what you did, as they've rounded out the slot int he back so you can just take the inner out without all that extra crap. Doing it the way you did can cause wires to get pinched and bunched, or the connectors to get jammed and not sit as they're supposed to.

The only thing I can think of is the connector had gotten bound or torqued and had too much tension and the only way it was relieved was breaking the solder. Anyway you can get me a pic of it, either PM it or put it up here?

I think your right, i did have some trouble getting it out of the way of the mag well.  Hopefully soon i can rewire it to the back and keep it from pinching that way.

Heres the crappy pics with phone, ill try to explain.

This is the deans with the soldered end busted off. You can see the little wire sticking off of the negative side (top right conductor)

I have the wires backwards, where as the top wire is the positive and the bottom is negative. Hard to see on the negative but there is one little strand sticking out. (deans was flipped to show underside)

This is just a shot of the gun with the wires out. Normally they're tucked underneath, and on top of the mag well.

Hmm... that's strange... maybe it was just that it got twisted or something and the solder couldn't hold, that's what it looks like, and with what you said that's what makes sense.

It shouldn't be hard to fix it right now, just re-strip the wires, put on the shrink wrap and move it as far away from the connector as possible to prevent premature shrinkage (no homo), tin the wires, heat up the solder on the connector and then remove the old wire that's stuck to it, then re-tin the connectors and connect them, melt the shrink wrap. Just be careful as I said, the whole connector can get hot to the touch, which most people doesn't seem to realize the plastic on it can get hot along with the gold conductors.

Decent vid of how to solder Deans connectors:

EDIT: OR get Dom or someone to do it for you if you're not comfortable doing it yourself.

It's not rocket science, but don't try this if you've never soldered before. You'll just end up melting your connectors.

Well i did it tonight, gun works fine.  and for an amature job, its not half bad.  I bubbled the solder a little big but the shrinkwrap still got over it. The plasic was also burned a slight bit. Im happy for myself and thank you for that video Jeremy, it helped lots

Not a problem man. Glad to see the old girl doing well for the most part.

I actually watched that vid like 10 times, then I saw someone actually do it and it made so much sense.

Took me forever to getthe solder on. then after i finished i realized my solder gun had the wrong tip on it. :P stupid me

And she works perfect, except for the pins falling off every once and a while. Front handguard is lost at original Airfarm, and the stock pin likes to slide.

Hmmm... Never had either problem... maybe she's showing her age. In March she'll be 2.  :D

If you need to know anything about the gun or whatever, Lemme know man, I'll just have to to charge you for tech support next time  :P

I *always* use a flat tip when I solder airsoft electrical components. It transfers the heat to trigger contacts/battery connectors/MOSFET parts much faster than a pointed tip can, meaning everything is a faster and cleaner connection.

I should have used the piece myself, just forgot to change it
