Was wondering what everyone thought about radios...what's good, dependable...what's not? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

A normal wallmart radio is what I use and it is just fine.

What do you need out of a radio? I personally am not happy unless I have at least 5w, VHF/UHF, dual channel Rx/Tx, etc. On the flip side, for some of the smaller, less vertically varied fields (i.e. Paintball Central), a $20 wallyworld radio will be fine.

well...i suppose i'm not entirely sure what I need. ...or what type of headset rig would be best, if worth having at all.

As far as headsets/earpieces go, the choice is really yours. You have try different models, see if they fit your physical features, and such. You also have to make sure they're durable.

That being said, I've bought and used $20 earpieces, and they work just fine.
Don't make your decision rashly; take your time, see what you can afford and what serves your purpose the best.
