Impending upgrades to the site... please read!

I'm going to be upgrading the forum software to a much newer version soon. An unfortunate side effect of this upgrade will be that our shoutbox will no longer function in it's current form. The full chatroom would still be the same, but there would be no shoutbox on the top of the forum's main index.

What do you guys think about that? I know I personally never use the shoutbox, but I use the full chatroom all the time. Would this be an issue for you, the members of the forum?

The shout box is good for little things that aren't important enough for forum post, but important enough to be said. Basically anything a mod has to say

Just to clarify since a lot people don't seem to realize this:

The shoutbox IS the chatroom, but embedded in the forum index page. It sucks in comparison to the chatroom because it has lag and fewer features.

I used to use the shout box when we had that awsome digital urban camo theme (which I hope we can get back  ), but now I don't use it at all, and I'd have no problem with it being gone. It's laggy and has less features.

Heads up! I'm currently backing up the forum files (over 2500, so that takes a while) and the database (every single user, PM, post, statistic, etc, so that takes a while too).

Once that's done, I'll be taking the forums offline to upgrade to newer software. Ideally this will only take 5 minutes, but it may take longer if I hit any snags. Don't panic if the forums are gone for 24 hours or so.

Obviously the forums are back. Don't try to use the chat at the moment, it doesn't work right. Ignore the logo too, the AOSC logo will show up soon enough.

Only problem so far that I've seen: When you raise somebody's karma, there's no place to leave a comment, and I can't find any place to see karma history.

That's the default SMF behavior. The karma system with comments was a modification. I have to adapt all those little custom features to the new version of SMF. You'll see those features and most anything else that's missing trickle back over the next few days.

I temporarily (most likely) ditched the old shoutbox in favor of an IRC chatroom. Go ahead and try it out, please.

I hate the new chat feature.  It says my screen name has illegal characters.
